The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. "Nobody else can see this" because she's embarrassed that her desires seemingly contradict the conservative way in which she lives her life. So, she tells the guy what she likes and how she wants to be touched, possibly even restrained, then, she lets go. The girl's "secret" is her suppressed desire to be controlled or "owned" by the boy for the night - which would allow her to be out of control and free - thus experiencing a heightened level of sexual ecstasy that she's never known. So, he lets her take control and drive for a while, but then he takes over "shifts gears" and "takes it from here." He waits patiently because he knows she will eventually acquiesce, and this is when he will step in more aggressively. He plays along with her desire to be in control - plays by her rules, lets her feel like she has it, even though underneath it all he is really the one in control, and both he and the girl know this. He does a proverbial dance with the girl about control - because she appears to want it. The guy is laid back, easy going, but knows what he wants, and how to get there.
